equality factor: empowering punk rock at its best
label: Epitaph
our favorite song: "Control"
based in: Philadelphia, USA
Today comes the release of "perfect", the latest EP of the punk rock trio Mannequin Pussy. With this musical work the three announce themselves back from the pandemic and it can be stated full of euphoria that this EP is in no way inferior to the previous releases. We had the pleasure to talk with the band about their latest piece of music, as well as their perception of the general equality status in punk rock.
"We just start playing and whatever shape the song is taking, it is what it is."
- Missy
That the band was fully in this one moment when they recorded "perfect" can be heard in every moment of the EP. The combination of the pieces, the content and musical dramaturgy behind it and the flow that captivates the listener from the first moment, make the sound of "perfect" so unique. So far, the band has always gone into the studio very well prepared and then recorded the pieces already worked out in advance. This time everything was different: before Missy Dabice, Bear (Colins) Regisford and Kaleen Reading went into the studio, they had only one song ready. Here also played a big role the great trust of the label Epitaph, who simply let the band pursue their creativity in the studio.
„We are creatives, but we are also investigators. What is the song trying to say to us and how can we find out what it is.“, explains lead guitarist and singer Missy. It is exactly this creativity inflow that makes this EP so special and that makes the individual songs merge into a very valuable artistic entity.
"I'm in control / That's what I tell myself when all the walls around me close in," Missy sings in the prescient opening lines of "Control." Not only in this song, the band manages to speak from the soul of the listeners and to address topics that are very close to all of our hearts. The title track "Perfect" is about how perfect many people make their lives look, even though the global situation we find ourselves in is not perfect at all. "We just figured if we forced ourselves into this situation where someone could hit 'record,' something might come out," Missy says. "We'd never written that way before." Which brings us back to the moment, the EP reminds us to enjoy it to the fullest, it makes you want to dance to it and just unconditionally accept everything in the here and now.
What is outstandingly good about Mannequin Pussy is the band's music videos. They are full of creative zeitgeist and playback the band's environment in a quite wonderful way, which couldn't be more diverse, colorful, and beautiful. Directed by Missy, who holds the creative lead over the music videos. She manages to combine her roles in front of and behind the camera in an impressive way. This succeeds above all through the wonderful team in which the videos are created and the relationship of trust that exists between everyone on the set.
